From Chaos to Clarity: Streamlining Communication in an Evolving Company
Ah, startups. A world of rapid growth, excitement, late-night pizza, and…miscommunication? Well, at least in one of the startups I had the pleasure of advising.
Picture this: I was a tech advisor for a brilliant team. They had it all – a mobile app for in-house warehouse operations, an admin app to manage products and internal processes, a sleek e-commerce platform, and a team of managers looking to optimize every logistic and product process. A dream scenario, right? Well, almost.
The main hiccup? Everyone was speaking a different language. Not literally, of course. We all spoke the universal language of code and coffee. But when it came to naming conventions within the project, it was like navigating through a maze.
Let me give you an example. One day, a manager would report that a particular module wasn’t working. The software team, diligent as ever, would jump into action, combing through the code, only to find…nothing. Why? Because that module wasn’t the problem at all. They were actually referring to a completely different one! A misnamed module here, a misunderstood terminology there, and soon we had a tangled web of miscommunication, which led to unnecessary time losses.
So, with the vision of expanding to international markets and enhancing efficiency, the decision was unanimous: We needed to unify our terminology. Easier said than done, right?
Surprisingly, the journey to clarity was quite engaging. We turned to the UniTree system (www.unitree.app). This platform was a lifesaver, extracting the plethora of terms scattered across our operations. But then, how do you decide on the ‘right’ name? That’s where the insightful “Enterprise Patterns and MDA: Building Better Software with Archetype Patterns and UML” by Jim Arlow and Ila Neustad came in handy. Through archetypes and patterns, we found a common ground.
A few weeks (and many brainstorming sessions) later, our dictionary of terms was ready, making our processes smoother and our communications clearer.
The moral of the story? It’s never too early or too late to standardize your language. Starting a new venture? Think about it. Already running a successful operation? It might be time for a terminology audit. After all, time saved is money earned!
Remember, it’s not just about the names. It’s about clarity, efficiency, and ensuring everyone is on the same page. Or at the very least, speaking the same language!
